Chow Mein Hamburger Hot Dish is a household favorite. Growing up in the midwest, my mom would have this dish on the weekly dinner rotation. Now, after making a few of my own modifications and introducing it to my casserole loving husband, it is now on OUR own dinner rotation!
This hearty casserole doesn’t take much effort to make. Once the ground beef and rice are cooked, they are combined with the remaining ingredients and poured into the casserole pan to bake for 20 minutes. It’s that easy!
Note: Be sure to save a couple handfuls of Chow Mein noodles to add when you reheat the leftovers.
Most of the ingredients are everyday items you may find in your kitchen – with the exception of Chow Mein noodles.
The casserole will fill your kitchen with smells to make your stomach rumble. Luckily, it only takes 20 minutes to cook. I always like to add a little more soy sauce after dishing a serving on my plate. Feel free to add additional chow mein noodles too. If you like an extra crunch to the mixture – try adding water chestnuts or bean sprouts before baking.

- 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
- 2 bags boil-in-a bag, cooked white or brown rice
- 2 cups celery, chopped
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 (10.75) can condensed cream of chicken
- 1 (10.75) can condensed cream of mushroom
- 2 tbs worcestershire sauce
- 4 tbs soy sauce
- 5 oz chow mein noodles
- 1 cup water
- 1 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C)
- Start boiling water for the 2 boil-in-a bag rice packets. In a large skillet over medium/high heat, saute the ground beef until almost fully browned. Add the onion and celery and saute for 5 more minutes.
- In a separate large bowl, combine the cream of mushroom, cream of chicken, water, soy sauce, worcestershire sauce, red pepper flakes (exclude chow mien noodles).
- Once rice and 1.5 lbs of ground beef are cooked, add both to soup & sauce mixture. Stir.
- Lightly spray and pour mixture into a 2 quart casserole dish.
- Top with chow mein noodles.
- Bake uncovered for 20 minutes. Enjoy!
You may also add water chestnuts or bean sprouts for extra crunch, but I never do. The crispy chow mein noodles give you enough of that!

Hi, I was looking to try this as it sounds really yummy and we are always looking for new simple meals. I however hate the texture of premade rice. How much cooked long grain rice would you use as a sub for the boil in bag stuff?
Heather says
Hi Michelle – I’ve made it many times with uncooked long grain rice. Substitute the boil in a bag rice by using 2 cups of water (instead of 1) and 3/4 cup of uncooked rice. Bake uncovered for 1 hour 15 minutes. Remove and add chow mein noodles. Cook for additional 15 minutes.

I use two cups of cooked rice. I also don’t like the boil in a bag rice.
I also mix in a bag of chow mein noodles and also top with part of a bag. Along with the rice the noodles help it stretch a bit farther. I have four children so I make double and adding veggies , noodles and rice help a lot.

We like to add mushrooms and baby corn, cut in bite-sized pieces. We even add bamboo shoots if the kids aren’t home. This is a highly requested !!
We don’t put the noodles on top because some people don’t like them. Usually the pan doesn’t even make it to the oven! You can also serve it with lightly salted cashews.
Sue says
Could I use chicken in place of hamburger?
Ada says
Try it out, why not?
